Criminologist and Gender Development Practitioner
Dr Sloane is a UK-based Researcher and Assistant Professor in Criminology. She teaches and researches the everyday experiences of gender-based violence among marginalized population groups and is committed to advancing gender equality and social justice through research-led teaching, training and community engagement.
Dr Sloane primarily concentrates her research on the Global South, and her work uses decolonial frameworks to better understand violence and resistance in the lives of women and children. She primarily engages with Sub-Saharan African local and diasporic populations, and her work explores how these population groups navigate the intersections of power, identity, and resistance.
Research Interests:
All forms of gender-based violence, including domestic or intimate partner violence and female genital mutilation (FGM).
Gender and Conflict.
Migration, Human Trafficking and Exploitation.
Critical and decolonial feminist criminology.
Feminist Jurisprudence – The study and critique of how legal and justice systems can sustain gender inequality and reinforce patriarchal structures within laws and criminal justice practices.
Race, Crime and Policing – The intersection of race, criminal behavior, and law enforcement practices.
Sociology of race - Racial injustice, racial media stereotypes and critical race theory.
Social inclusion and connectedness - the quality and diversity of social engagement and participation in Britain, including how marginalized identities establish and sustain social connections and relationships.
Dr Sloane’s expertise in Black and Indigenous feminisms, decoloniality and the challenges faced by women from the Global South stands at the forefront of her research. Her pioneering study in this area, titled “Hostile Environment Policy, Intimate Partner Violence and Resilience among Nigerian Migrant Women Living in the UK.” explored the dynamics of gender, race and violence through a decolonial feminist lens and the intersections of power, identity and resistance.
In her teaching roles, she has taught and led courses specifically focusing on feminist criminology and has been involved in faculty or university-level Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committees, highlighting her dedication to excellence and diversity in UK higher education research and scholarship. Dr Sloane currently teaches Criminology and Policing at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.
Beyond academia, Dr Sloane remains active as a Gender Development Practitioner (GDP) and has been an active contributor at national and international conferences, seminars and training sessions. Her collaborative efforts with NGOs, activists, and policymakers extend beyond the UK to other countries in Africa, Europe and Asia, marking her as a global advocate in her field. Her aim has always been to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world experiences, ensuring that the insights gained through her research and activism have a tangible impact on society.
