60th Anniversary Conference of the Department of Sociology

20 September 2024.

As part of the University of Essex Department of Sociology's 60th anniversary celebrations, I was invited to present at the Borders and Coloniality panel. My presentation focused on the epistemic injustice embedded in domestic violence interventions for Nigerian women experiencing abuse in the UK. I examined how mainstream support systems may fail to account for the unique cultural, social, and structural barriers these women face, leading to their voices being marginalized in policy and practice. I highlighted the urgent need for more inclusive, contextually aware approaches that recognize their lived realities and agency and provide meaningful, accessible support.
